Excursions
From  Sitia, the entire East of Crete reveals itself for exploration.
The east coast is a short drive away.
There, the famous palm beach of Vai is worth a visit, and so are the ruins of Itanos, the Minoan palace of Roussolakos, and the village of Kato Zakros with it's bay and it's Minoan excavation site.

A well paved road leads towards Makrighialos on the south coast, and passing several dream beaches further on to Ierapetra (59 km) with it's picturesque Venetian fortress.

|
Kato Mera, the old town of Ierapetra, is of typical Mediterranean flair and has many small shops and workshops where hand-made souvenirs of many kind are offered.
The excavation site of Gournia is located some 51 kms south-west by the road from Aghios Nicolaos to Ierapetra.
The best preserved of all Minoan settlements dates from 1,600 to 1,400 B.C. and presents a network of lanes and stairways as well as a small palace.

One should also not miss to have a tour of the town of Aghios Nicolaos on the north coast (70 kms) and it's port.
